Tidy is a small native app that lives in your menu bar. It doesn’t scan your disk or run heavy daemons in the background.
Yes. You can point Tidy at any folder — including a Downloads folder in iCloud Drive — from Flow Rules → Watched folder → Change. macOS grants access to that folder and Tidy sorts it just like the default one.
Yes (v1.10). Under Flow Rules → “Watch another folder…” you add as many as you like — Documents, an external drive, wherever your screenshots land — and your same rules keep them tidy, nothing new to set up. Each folder tidies into subfolders inside itself, and Tidy only touches files created after you added it: you can point it at ten years of files without fear.
A button (v1.10) that looks at what sits in plain sight in your watched folders and warns you if a sensitive document was left lying around: a card number, a scanned ID or passport, a bank account, a signed contract. It only warns — nothing gets moved, encrypted or deleted. The analysis happens entirely on your Mac. And if a file arrives that runs code disguised as a document (“Invoice.pdf.app”), Tidy warns you the moment it lands.
Yes (v2.0). Under "Search by content" you type what you remember the file said — "Acme", "lease", an amount — and Tidy searches INSIDE your images and PDFs, scanned ones included. Spotlight never OCRs scanned PDFs at all, and its Live Text indexing of images is partial and can lag by days — Tidy keeps its own instant, reliable index. It uses the same local index as renaming: everything happens on your Mac.
Tidy watches only your watched folders — never the whole disk — and notices when you move files by hand to the same place. On the third identical move it proposes: "You have moved 3 PDFs into Invoices. Want a rule?". You decide: one click creates it, another dismisses it forever. It never creates a rule on its own.
No. Tidy never looks inside subfolders — it only sees loose files in the watched folder. Anything you keep in a folder, like a work-in-progress project, stays untouched with no setup needed.
Yes. Turn on “Rename from their content” in any rule and images and PDFs get named from what is inside them — a “download (3).pdf” becomes “invoice-march.pdf”. It is the same on-device OCR used for screenshots. Formats with no readable text (audio, archives) keep their original name.
Yes — and by what a file says INSIDE, too. A rule can match text in the filename (“beatloop”, “invoice”) or require words in the content: Tidy reads images and PDFs with on-device OCR and sends, say, every PDF that mentions “Acme” to its folder. You can also describe the rule in plain English and the AI builds it for you.
Yes. A rule can “Rename only, don’t move”: it names the file from its content and leaves it where it is. Under Name style you choose lowercase, separator, German transliteration (ä→ae), and the date format. And if your Mac has Apple Intelligence, you can write a free-form prompt per rule (“in German, lowercase, date at the end”) and the on-device model names the file accordingly — nothing leaves your Mac.
Yes. Under “Rename now”, Tidy scans your Downloads and Desktop, reads your images and PDFs, and shows you the name it would give each one. Tick the ones you want and you are done — files that already have a proper name come unticked. Nothing moves and everything is undoable.
